The Evolution of The Cell Phone

This video was recently uploaded to youtube.com to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the cell phone, and to show the many transformations the cell phone has gone under.

It seems hard to imagine life today without our cell phones, but a mere 40 years ago they did not even exist. Today, cell phones are used rarely to make calls. Instead, they are mainly used to browse the internet, send texts, use social media sites, take pictures, send emails, and to conduct business. Even basic cell phones have picture and text messaging capabilities. Cell phones help people organize their lives, stay in touch, and be available 24/7. Many find today's cell phone as much a curse as a blessing due to people's dependance on them. The cell phone has gone under many transformations since it's invention to become the cell phone that we all love and use today.

Prior to mobile cellular phones, the only way for a person to use a phone outside of a home was at a paid phone booth, or with a car phone. Then in the early 1970's, the mobile cell phone was invented. The first cell phone was introduced into the market in 1973 by Motorola. This phone weighed over two pounds and had only a thirty minute battery life. Despite the short battery life, the phone had to be charged for over ten hours before each use. The first cell phone was only capable of making phone calls. What a long way the cell phone has come!

Happy Birthday Cell Phone!
